Fashion doesn’t always equate to clothes. A beautifully tasteful and exquisite shot of Rosey Ross and Devon Maitozo. The body as fashion.

These two were included in the ESPN Magazine’s Body Issue for my beloved sport of vaulting. I’ve known these two since 6th grade and it’s amazing to see vaulting finally gain some clout and recognition as a sport. It’s huge in Europe but only just starting to gain some notoriety in the states.

I’m proud of them and the work they’ve done, both in their own careers, and for what this picture will do for the sport of vaulting.

Style is the answer to everything A fresh way to approach a dull or dangerous thing To do a dull thing with style is preferable to doing a dangerous thing without it To do a dangerous thing with style, is what I call art
Bullfighting can be an art Boxing can be an art Loving can be an art Opening a can of sardines can be an art
Not many have style Not many can keep style I have seen dogs with more style than men Although not many dogs have style Cats have it with abundance
When Hemingway put his brains to the wall with a shotgun, that was style For sometimes people give you style Joan of Arc had style John the Baptist Jesus Socrates Caesar García Lorca
I have met men in jail with style I have met more men in jail with style than men out of jail Style is a difference, a way of doing, a way of being done
Six herons standing quietly in a pool of water, or you, walking out of the bathroom without seeing me.“Style” by Charles Bukowski

I love this tattoo because at first glance it could almost be her spine. Upon closer inspection, it emulates a long braid, but upon FURTHER inspection, it has some stunning Native American influences in it. The diamond at the bottom almost looks like an impressionistic take on the Native American Thunderbird. I may also be partial to it because the back looks a lot like a piece I just designed for Burning Man. We shot in the studio on Wednesday and I should have some pictures of the piece I’m talking about for you by next week. I’m SO excited to see how they turned out.

My favorite thing about fashion is learning what the designer’s inspiration was. If you have the right eye and make the right connections in your brain, inspiration could come from literally anywhere: a bucked horseshoe laying on top of a hay bale, the homeless man named Valin Sweetwine who plays the flute outside your local library, the mantra to leave no weekend behind. But I love Rodarte’s take on something bigger than we’ve ever known, but often goes unnoticed and underappreciated: the very sky we live under. It seems obvious now that he’s done it, but how long have we been waiting for a collection that looks like this? What beautiful homage he’s paid to both Van Gogh and our solar system. I love how he’s structured the dresses to be as fluid and flowing as our night sky. And if the sun came down to earth and started walking around, I bet she’d put on that yellow dress. I could imagine any of these pieces walking down the street, being turned into a painting or being hung in a museum.
